This week is Breastfeeding awareness week so I thought I would do my bit to help big up the benefits of feeding your baby yourself. Having breastfed two children myself, I know that it is no easy task. For some mothers it may come easily but for others it can be a very emotional, exhausting time. Despite the problems I had initially, with some fantastic support I managed to feed both my children for at least 6 months (the recommended period by the Department of Health). There is so much support available now, within Hospitals, from Health Visitors, Maternity Staff and from Breastfeeding Support Workers.
Many people just don’t realise the benefits of breastfeeding, here are a few wonderful ways that both you and your baby can be rewarded. Don’t forget that breastfeeding is also an amazing way to bond with your baby.
Breastfeeding helps protect your baby against:
- ear infections
- gastro-intestinal infections
- chest infections
- urine infections
- childhood diabetes
Breastfeeding helps protect mothers against:
- ovarian cancer
- breast cancer
- weak bones later in life.
Women who breastfeed return to their pre-pregnancy figure faster. (Yippee….)
So tell your friends and help to big up Breastfeeding this week! Even if you just manage a few days or a few weeks – this will give your baby a great start in life. Don’t forget there is lots of help there if you do need it, and it does get easier!
