The Big Butterfly Count is the world’s biggest survey of butterflies and is due to take place from Saturday 19th July to Sunday 10th August 2014. Taking part in the count is fun and easy and will help conservationists monitor the state of our butterfly population. It is a great fun activity to do with the children and you can do the count in your garden, at the park, in the woods or even in a school.
You can find all the information you need from the Big Butterfly Count website. you can also download a useful ID chart from this page and log your results online. You can take part in the count as many times as you like, from as many different locations as you like. You can also check out the results so far to see which butterflies have already been spotted in your area. There is also a handy little app which allows you to record your count on the go! You can download the iphone version here
We love getting the children involved in nature and this is a great way to teach them about different species of butterflies and about how we can help Butterfly Conservation.
